The Story

VARA’s Kassa Panel is a live primetime Saturday night show that has now become highly interactive. With Kassa Panel, TV host Brecht van Hulten takes on the big household-names, getting results and showing viewers how they can fight back.

Kassa is a weekly consumer television series produced by Public Broadcast Station VARA. The first second screen live show aired on September 2012 and the current season runs for 40 episodes. The program focuses on consumer affairs, reviewing and testing products, and also reports on issues with products or services based on consumer input. The newly added second screen experience is seamlessly integrated into the already highly successful TV series, magazine and frequently visited website and community. Consumers now are in the driving seat more than ever, allowing them to participate during the show and also have a say on topics for future episodes.

Kassa Panel – real time feedback on TV

Kassa Panel is offered as both a native app and web-app to involve viewers during, as well as before and after the live show. During the live show on Saturday evening, the Kassa app works on Ex Machina’s PlayToTV platform allowing viewers to interact with the show in real time. Viewers can immediately give their opinion on the show’s four main segments as they are being aired, e.g., “Do you agree with this statement” (current consumer issues), “How do you rate the questioned company’s reaction to this specific issue?” (addressing a viewer’s particular case), “Which debater gets your vote?” (live debate in the studio) and “What brand performs best?” (product test). After each segment, the second screen results are communicated giving the second screen user an incentive to participate. Results are part of the programme in a variety of ways; sometimes verbally mentioned by the host, other times shown on giant screens in the studio. The viewers’ product test grades are revealed in comparison with the expert panel’s results and discussed with the invited guests and experts in the show.

Having seamlessly united their new second screen feature with their first screen format and Kassa Brand, Kassa has proven that the Kassa Panel app not only complements but enriches the viewer’s TV experience.
